Building the 'Sinbad':

Bertrand and Stéphanie's build of the nesting dinghy "Sinbad" is now complete and they have gone cruising. Their yacht is called "Pai-Me", a Sun Kiss cruising yacht. They are now in the Balearic Islands and have kindly sent me some pictures of their dinghy in use.

Here the 'Sinbad' dinghy is under sail, a standing lug which is very simple and places a decent amount of sail area relatively low. Interestingly, in proper cruiser fashion, they cut the sail from an older foresail. Here from a different angle. The 'Sinbad' and its larger sister 'Sinbad 2' are both very stable and have good load carrying capacity. To test test this, 3 adults and 3 children were loaded into this dinghy, a combined load of 370kg - admittedly one would not want to do this for normal use.

Here Bertrand is rowing the dinghy. Note that the oars are demountable, having a sleeved join. A small 3.3hp outboard is sufficient power to push her along. The dinghy can be carried in davits as in this picture. Ideal when one is among islands when it is easier to launch. Once under way to a farther destination it can be taken apart and stowed on the foredeck.
