Lifting ring "A set of lifting rings for your outboard"
If you have a cruising yacht and carry the outboard for the tender on a bracket on the pushpit, you are well aware of the problem of lifting the motor up or lowering it down to the dinghy.
I used to make up a rope sling that had two loops, one fore and one aft, under the motor head. To these loops I attached a nice thick braided line, mostly the mainsheet. By passing the line over the boom (I have a loose footed main) there is sufficient control during lowering or lifting due to the friction on the boom.
The nuisance was mostly in rigging the rope slings. Getting the two legs even etc. and threading it through and making sure it is secure just takes too long. This then led to the addition of two lifting rings that are permanently screwed into the motor, by tapping the casing. The rings are simple made from a short hex-head stainless steel bolt with an oval ring welded to it at nearly right angles.
Into the rings I thread a 1" webbing strap. Each end of the strap has a loop sewn in. By passing the strap first through one ring, then over the cowl to the other ring and up again one can tie the lifting line through the two loops.
The picture shows one ring close up.
